What Every Homeowner Should Know About HVAC Filters

Last updated 5 years ago

The air filter inside your HVAC system can be easy to forget about. But while it may be out of sight, it should remain at the front of your mind when it comes to indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency. In fact, a dirty air filter is one of the primary reasons why a homeowner may find themselves requesting a service call with their heating contractor.

Not only can a dirty air filter compromise the function of your system, but it can also impede energy efficiency. While there are a lot of considerations to make when choosing an air filter, all HVAC filters compromise a system’s efficiency when dirty. Clogged filters greatly impede airflow and cause your HVAC system to work much harder. Dirty filters also reduce your indoor air quality, allowing pollutants to freely bypass the filtration component of your system and circulate inside your home.

Choosing a filter can be confusing, especially when you consider that there a variety of filters available on the market and even subcategories within basic filter types. The most common filter is a fiberglass floss filter, usually blue or white in color and typically very affordable. Fiberglass filters pick up dust, but they don’t do much to improve the air quality inside your home. High-efficiency pleated filters, on the other hand, are designed to provide more surface area for greater pollutants and particle capture.

It is important that you have the right filter matched to your HVAC system as well as your indoor air quality needs. A high-efficiency filter paired with a system that can’t handle the increased demand for airflow isn’t the best match. Contact your air conditioning and heating repair company to find the filter that provides you with good indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and helps protect your system without compromising airflow.
